Benign Growths

The term benign growth, or benign skin lesion does not depict a specific skin condition, as they encompass many different skin issues. But they do have a few things in common, they are all are non-cancerous bumps, spots, or even a change to the skin that develops over time. It is important to monitor your skin for new growths or lesions, and make note of any changes. Benign growths can often be mistaken for skin cancers, and vice versa, so it’s important to stay on top of your regular full body skin exams.

Because they are benign and not cancerous, they are not dangerous, though sometimes they can be uncomfortable or easily irritated.

Common types of benign growths include:

  • Cherry angiomas
  • Cysts
  • Moles
  • Sebborheic keratoses
  • Skin tags
  • Warts

What causes benign growths?

Several factors can contribute to the development of benign growths, and vary depending on the type.

Genetics: Benign growths like moles and skin tags tend be hereditary.

Aging: As we age, our skin changes therefore becoming more prone to developing growths such as seborrheic keratoses or cherry angiomas.

Sun Exposure: UVA & UVB rays can damage the skin, which makes one more prone to the development of certain growths, especially on parts of the body that are frequently exposed to the sun.

Hormonal Changes: Significant fluctuations in hormones, like during pregnancy for example, can lead to changes in the skin like the development of new skin tags or other benign lesions.

Friction or Irritation: Rubbing, irritation, or friction on the skin (from clothing, jewelry, or skin folds) can cause growths like skin tags.

How are benign growths treated?

In our office, treatment depends on the type and location of the growth. We offer cryotherapy (freezing), excision, and laser therapy. Many benign growths don’t require removal unless they are symptomatic, changing in appearance, or for cosmetic reasons.
